Healthy apple crumble with ghee

When making fruit crumbles, we are used to adding a lot of sugar to the fruit part as well as to the topping part. And this goes to show that it is not because a dessert’s main ingredient is fruit that it will necessarily be a healthy treat. In this version, the apple slices are left natural and they will bake in their own natural sugars. The topping is sweetened but not as much as it would be in a traditional apple crumble. I find this recipe absolutely delicious and the tartness of the apples gives it a tangy taste. My kids enjoyed it and have asked me to make it again.

  • 6 medium apples, skin removed, sliced
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • 1 1/3 cups almond flour
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • 1/3 cup melted ghee (can use melted butter or melted coconut oil as well)
  • 1/3 to ½ cup maple syrup or honey (I used honey)
  • 1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract

  • Set oven at 350 F.
  • Pour the lemon juice on apple slices and mix so that apples are coated by the juice.
  • Arrange the apple slices on the bottom of a 9” glass pie dish.
  • Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl (almond flour, rolled oats, ground cinnamon and salt).
  • In another bowl, mix the melted ghee, maple syrup or honey and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the ghee mixture onto the dry ingredients and mmix well, forming a dough.
  • Spread dough onto apples pressing with your hands to get a compact even topping.
  • Bake in the oven for approximately 45 minutes, checking often to avoid burning the topping.Serve with coconut yogurt for a healthy snack or with vanilla ice cream for a more decadent desert.
